Penile Fracture – What is it?

penis fracture Penile Fracture – What is it?Penile fracture is one of the rare but very serious conditions; it is now a case of medical emergency. Penile fracture is severe in nature that results from bending injury to an engorged and erect penis that can occur when the tunica albuginea is torn. Tunica albuginea is a membrane surrounding the corpora cavernosa, that has a specialized spongy body and tissues in its core that tends to fill up with blood when the penis is erect. If the tunica albuginea is destroyed, blood confined inside the space would lean into the remaining tissues. This would result in swelling and bruising.

Causes of Penile Fracture

Penile fracture is caused due to various underlying factors that have been noted below:

  • Improper Position during Sexual Intercourse: One of the probable and common causes of penile fracture would be improper sexual intercourse with a woman on top or the man trying to enter her from rear. The enlarged or erect penis can bend or twist at such conditions. This is likely to happen if a man falls off with an erect penis and lands on the penis directly.
  • Weight Hanging for Penis Enlargement: Penis hanging weights is certainly one of the most risky treatment approaches for increasing the length of the penis that can result in penile fracture. Additionally, penis weights can also cause immense damage to the penis ligaments that supports the structure of the penis. Furthermore, of the weight is excessive, it could make the organ narrower. Therefore, even if the length increases, the girth would become thinner. Thickness of the penis matters more to woman than its length.
  • Accidents: Penile fracture can also be caused due to accidents in which a man might fall of with an engorged penis. Such accidents, though not common, have been some of the responsible factors for penile fracture.

Signs and Symptoms of Penile Fracture

There are some common signs of penile fracture, such as intense pain in the penis, swelling or inflammation, abnormal shape of the penis, bruising, urinating problems or inability, impotence or erectile dysfunction. Some men have reportedly heard a breaking or cracking sound when the fracture took place.

Treatment for Penile Fracture

Penile fracture is a serious medical condition that demands immediate treatment. Emergency medical attention is required for this condition. Ice packs, pain relievers, anti-inflammatory drugs and other medications are often prescribed at the initial stage. Surgery could also be a consideration if the condition aggravates. Under the influence of general anesthesia, a surgeon will operate the person by making a small incision or as required for reconnecting the tissues that have ruptured with stitches. Most men would not require over night stay, as the surgery is quite simple. Recovery time is approximately 4-6 weeks once the incision has healed properly. It is only after 6 weeks that a person can get back to normal sexual activities. Penile fracture recovery would be painful in most of the cases, at least during the first 7 days. Anti-inflammatory drugs are recommended, along with pain killers for speedy recovery.

The condition should not be left untreated, as it might result in severe consequences.
